Today, a meme is defined as a concept that is spread via the Internet.  It was first coined in 1976 in a book by Richard Dawkins called The Selfish Gene, and it’s first usage referred to broader cultural spreading of information.  There was the Great Depression and the Baby Boomer Generation but if I had to coin today’s era, it would be the Digital Age. Therefore, memes have become popularized by the Internet (samples below):
